Frequently asked questions

What is TuxNest?

TuxNest is an India-built local-first AI coding agent project for VS Code, created by Paladugu Ganesh Naidu, designed to support local inference and suitable remote Ollama model hosts over SSH.

What is a hybrid-compute local AI agent?

A workflow where the development interface and AI inference may operate on different machines. In TuxNest, workspace tools stay local while model inference can use a selected remote host.

Can TuxNest use my own GPU?

Yes, when a compatible local or remote Ollama runtime is installed and configured on that machine.

Can I use a workstation while travelling?

Yes, if it is powered on, reachable over an authorized network path and correctly secured.

Does TuxNest require a hosted cloud AI API?

Not when using a supported local Ollama or self-managed remote Ollama model. Explicit compatible hosted endpoints are an alternative.

Does it support SSH inference?

The product documentation describes SSH-tunneled Ollama inference on user-managed hosts; check the release you install.

Does my laptop need a strong GPU?

Not for inference performed on a separate GPU host. The laptop still needs enough resources for VS Code and local coding tools.

Is TuxNest zero-setup?

The extension can streamline connection, but a remote host needs a working model runtime, network access, SSH authentication and adequate hardware.

Can Tailscale be part of the connection?

A Tailscale or suitable VPN configuration may provide private network reachability. The Ollama connection and SSH security still require appropriate setup.

Can I save API fees?

Self-managed inference can avoid hosted model token charges, but owning, powering and maintaining hardware is not free.

Is self-hosted AI fully private?

Not automatically. Security depends on the whole toolchain, host permissions, logs, network paths, backups and other integrations.

Can a bank use production customer data?

Only after bank-specific security, privacy, legal and regulatory approval. TuxNest is not a certified banking-compliance product.

Do commands execute on the remote GPU host?

No. SSH inference does not automatically redirect ordinary VS Code workspace command execution to that host.

Which models are supported?

Supported models depend on the configured Ollama or compatible endpoint and host resources. Check actual model discovery in the installed version.

How do I install TuxNest?

Use the website's Download page and verified Marketplace or packaged VSIX instructions.

Is TuxNest open source?

The website presents TuxNest as MIT-licensed. Check the published artifact and actual source repository for the code covered by that license.

What platforms does it support?

The project's documentation describes VS Code development on Windows, macOS and Linux, subject to the installed extension and runtime prerequisites.

What makes TuxNest different?

Its emphasis is an IDE coding workflow plus explicit use of local or separately hosted user-controlled inference—not merely remote GPU rental.

Who created TuxNest?

Paladugu Ganesh Naidu is identified as the creator and developer of TuxNest.

Is India’s First independently confirmed?

No. The line is a proposed category-positioning slogan. Broad chronological priority remains unverified and should not be represented as established history.

Our tagline is “Tuxnest is India's first plug-and-play hybrid AI agent ecosystem”. Self-hosted inference requires appropriate host security, model capacity, power and networking; it does not establish automatic legal compliance.
